Managing the global commons

Abstract

Managing the global commons are vital to preserving humanity. Global commons refer to shared things such as ocean, water, fisheries, forests, and other commons that are needed for survival. Due to the large population of people, disruptive behavior in managing these commons can create a problem. When global commons are not managed, problems such as global warming, biodiversity and ecosystem losses, fisheries depletion, deforestation, water deficits, and pollution of oceans can occur. In order to reserve these commons it is up to everyone to take a part in creating a safer and healthier environment for all.
Part One: Identification of issue or problem
The need. The issues and reasons for investigating the problem of managing
global commons will focus on the problems faced if not handled correctly. Many of the problems that exist today are a result of mismanaged global commons.
Statement of the research problem. This research project will investigate what is the value of global commons for life on the planet.
Benefits of the research. From the findings listed within this paper, it is expected to benefit leaders and those involved in creating a sustainable environment to include other college students, and teachers. Ultimately this paper will benefit all human beings, since managing the global commons is everyone’s responsibility.
Method for investigation and analysis. A thorough examination of books, Internet sources, and newspapers will be conducted and discussed to offer supporting evidence that will meet the client’s needs. In order to assure the validity and reliability of the findings scholarly sources will be used. In addition, previous research from other cases will be reviewed.
Part Two: Literature review
Research studies literature related to the issue/problem. Rischard’s (2002) text High Noon provides detailed issues about the important of sharing out planet and the issues that involve the global commons. “The global commons refers to shared things like oceans, water, forest-things we all need but that can end up abused through an implacable logic of the tragedy of the commons” (Rischard, 2002). Global warming, biodiversity and ecosystem losses, fisheries depletion, deforestation, water deficits, and pollution of oceans have become a growing problem faced by misuse of global commons.
An article in Time magazine published an extensive article on global warming. One of the problems with global warming is the drastic changes within the climate. Unfortunately, when a climate continues to change at an increasing rate, problems will arise. Due changes in the climate; earth will suffer from disasters such as drought, insects, and increased flooding making it difficult for survival (Kluger, 2006). Furthermore, climate change has resulted in 150,000 extra deaths a year and this number is expected to double by the year 2030. Some of the global problems involve countries like China. China’s population is expected to grow. And because of the mass amounts of people the making of transportation is also expected to increase. China is expected to produce 15 million cars a year (Adler, 2006). Additionally because of the increase in cars this will increase pollutants in the air.
Within another article, titled Turbulent Air (2002) published from the Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy. The journal describes the “Earth’s atmosphere as a unique natural resource that no one owns or can control and anyone can pollute it” (Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy, 2002). The danger this has created involves results from the world’s worst pollutants from the combustion of fossil fuels. The world is populated heavily with motor vehicles and coal-fired power plants.
Cases literature related to the issue/problem. From the articles studied and compared, it was reported that managing global commons is a problem that must be worked. One must understand that people can contribute to solving these problems instead of waiting for the government to step in. “The authors concluded that such air pollution has been responsible for 10 million deaths during the past decade in the developing world” (Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy, 2002). This is a severe problem in some countries; fortunately, the air in the United States is not as bad as other countries. These problems were lessoned due to the development of regulatory evolution in air-quality control. Other problems challenges include lowering carcinogenic particles from diesel engines; reducing other emissions, such as ozone, mercury, and other toxic materials; eliminating acid rain; improving visibility; and preventing global climate change (Forum for Applied Research and Public Policy, 2002).
Options identified in the literature for approaching the problem. From the articles and text, I learned that there are possibilities in reducing dangerous emissions in the air. One of the options includes the use of the natural step to reduce problems among the global commons. The natural step was first discovered as a scientific term in Sweden (Nattrass & Altomare, 1999). The natural step is a process that uses natural elements that are safer for the environment. The natural step consists of four principles of ecology for life to sustain. According to Nattrass & Altomare (1999) there are certain conditions that must be present in order for life to exist. The basic steps are listed below:
(1) Reduce dependency on materials from the earth’s crust.(2) Decrease compounds produced by society that accumulate in nature.(3) Ensure that the productive capacity and diversity of nature is not diminished.(4) Use resources fairly and efficiently to meet human needs (p. 25).
Other options include finding an international agreement on the exploitation of global commons. This can be accomplished through scientific and technological requirements; however, the difficulty of this method is how to balance the economic and political interests. It would be beneficial if countries could come into agreement and find a solution that would work for all countries (Warren, 2002).
Conceptual and theoretical literature related to the issue/problem. The underlying assumptions within the report are awareness. Everyone is not aware or do not care about managing global commons. These issues are related to the problem statement because it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to a better environment.
Summary of literature review. Overall, it is important for corporations and consumers to realize the importance of the managing the global commons. The natural step enhances the environments well being and contributes to managing the global commons. Without the natural step, companies would continue to endanger the environment. Some companies have lost business for failing to rectify an environmental safe solution. Leaders, companies and consumers must learn that sustaining momentum is everyone’s responsibility. By incorporating natural steps into the environment the world and the people, which live within it, are better off in the end. The world must take a close reflection to what it can do to make the world a safer place to live in.
Part Three: Conclusions and recommendations
Conclusions. From the research examined within this study, it is important to find solutions to protect the global commons. Currently many solutions are being looked into to ensure that the atmosphere is not abused. Although managing the global commons may be quite difficult, it is worth it. When the global commons are abused, many harmful elements can be introduced into the environment.
Approaches/Options. Some of the options discussed for managing the global commons include making it everyone’s business. This would take a worldwide approach for everyone to stop abusing the earth. Another approach would include awareness and find ways that would benefit all.
What are the implications of your findings for the client CEO? The implications of findings for the client CEO are to provide information that would introduce sustainability. It would be vital for the client to work with the community and other countries to find improvements for global commons.
What recommendations do you have for your client? The recommendations for the client would involve introducing the Natural step and working together with countries to reduce the problems associated with the global commons.

Earn Extra Cash Shopping

Mystery Shopping is a good way to supplement your income. The good thing about mystery shopping is the fast cash that you make doing something that is fun. However, buyer beware there are some scam artist out there. You have to be very careful of these. A legitimate shop will never make you pay a fee before you shop. Just check out these sites pretty much provide you with the tools. Now mystery shopping will not of course make you rich, but it is nice to shop and get reimbursed for certain products or earn extra cash. Most shops pay between $5.00 to $20.00 per shop. Here are some good sites that I recommend.

1) http://bestmark.com
2) http://shopnchekshopper.com
3) http://beyondhello.com

These are just a few, that I have dealt with.

Happy New Year 2007

The year 2006 is long gone and many things have changed. I am looking for bigger and better things to happen in the 2007. This year I plan really explore the business world and get my foot in the corporate world. Since graduation, I have really been laying out a plan for the next step. In February I will attend a Organizational Change and Development Conference. Hopefully this will allow me a space to meet some professionals in the Consulting field.

In December I finally went home for the holidays, although everything seemed the same. So many things had changed. It was good to family and introduce them to my new family. I hadn't really been back since 1998. By anymeans that is just too long to be away. Although my parents are no longer living, I can still appreciate all of my relatives.
